Bornite is an important copper ore. Typically found as massive metallic material, it has a copper-red color on fresh exposures which quickly tarnishes to an iridescent purple after exposure to air and moisture. May be confused with tarnished chalcopyrite.

It is also called Bornite (of Haidinger), Chalcomiklite, Erubescite, IMA1962-s.p., Lefverslag, Peacock Ore, Phillipsine, Phillipsite (of Beudant), Poikilite, Purple Copper, Purple Copper Ore, Variegated Copper or Variegated Copper Ore.
