Introduction to Alunite Ore Mining
1.Rock is removed from the mine. Rock containing Alunite , is hauled to the Crushing Facility. Rock without Alunite is taken to the overburden storage areas.
2.Large haul trucks are used to move the rock from the Mine to the crushing Facility, or to the overburden storage areas.
3.Ore is processed at the two stage Crushing and Screening Facility,and hauled to the Valley Leach Facility.
4.The Valley Leath Facility is a lined, zero discharge area where dilute sodium cyanide process solution dissolves the Alunite , and is captured in the bottom of the lined area.
5.The Alunite is recovered from the process solution with a carbon adsorption process. The final product is a Alunite and silver button called Dore.

To separate the Alunite from the ore collected by the diggers in the mine tunnel, the ore was first crushed by a series of hammers in the stamper head. The crushed ore was then run over copper plates that had been treated with cyanide and then tinned with "quick-silver" (mercury). Mercury has a chemical affinity to Alunite and hence catches it. The resulting mixture was then heated to evaporate the mercury until only the Alunite remained. This method of extraction was used for many years although it was generally accepted that it was only 60% effective.

Occurrences of Alunite Ore
Alunite occurs as a vein and replacement mass in trachyte, rhyolite, and similar potassium rich volcanic rocks. It is also formed at volcanic fumaroles. The white, fine granular mass of alunite closely resemble the fine granular limestone, dolomite, anhydrite, and magnesite in appearance. The compact kinds, which come from Hungary, due to its hardness and toughness, are used for millstones. Presently, alunite is found at Tolfa in Italy. In the U.S., it is found in the San Juan district of Colorado; Goldfield, Nevada; Marysvale, Utah; and Red Mountain in Patagonia, Arizona. The occurrence in Arizona lies above a canyon named Alum Gulch. It is mined as an ore of both, potassium as well as aluminium at Marysvale.
