In 2000, Germany was the world's largest lignite producer, the world's third-largest producer of potash, Western Europe's second-largest producer of kaolin, a major European producer of crude gypsum, and self-sufficient in feldspar and salt. The only metal mineral still mined in Germany was uranium.

Deutsche Bergwerks- und Hüttenbau : Deutsche Bergwerks- und Hüttenbau GmbH (DBH, German for German Mine Construction) was a German company specializing in construction of mines and quarries. Established under the name of Preussische Bergwerks- und Hütten-AG in late 19th century, during the World War II it ran one of the sub-camps of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp complex.

Reichswerke Hermann Göring : An industrial conglomerate of Nazi Germany. It was established in July 1937 to extract and process domestic iron ores from Salzgitter that were deemed uneconomical by the privately held steel mills. The state-owned Reichswerke was seen as a vehicle of hastening growth in ore mining and steel output regardless of private capitalists' plans and opinions, which ran contrary to Adolf Hitler's strategic vision. In November 1937 Hermann Göring obtained unchecked access to state financing and launched a chain of mergers, diversifying into military industries with the absorption of Rheinmetall. Göring himself supervised the Reichswerke but did not own it in any sense and did not make personal profit from it directly, although at times he withdrew cash for personal expenses.

Vereinigte Stahlwerke : A German industrial conglomerate producing coal, iron, and steel in the interbellum and during World War II.The VSt were founded in 1926 when economic pressures (decreasing prices and excess capacities) led to the union of several companies including Thyssen AG, Phoenix AG für Bergbau und Hüttenbetrieb, Rheinische Stahlwerke, Rhein-Elbe-Union GmbH, Deutsch-Luxemburgische Bergwerks- und Hütten-AG, Bochumer Verein, and Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks-AG. This group united of most German iron, steel and coal producers, but did not include Hoesch AG, Krupp AG, Klöckner-Werke, Gutehoffnungshütte, and Mannesmann.
